HHRA Update 31 August 2026
Updated: Sep 3
First of all, may I welcome more new members: do look at the Latest News section of the website www.hhra.org.uk to see the items that have been covered in recent Updates.
Infection at Titchfield Haven National Nature Reserve
As others of you may have heard, we have received the following very sad news from The Haven:
Titchfield Haven National Nature Reserve has been forced to take measures after the North Scrape patch of the reserve was found to be contaminated by avian botulism.
The bacteria is believed to have thrived in the area due to the recent spell of hot weather drying out parts of the wetland.
The bacteria has already killed several birds in the area.
The bacteria is known to affect wild waterbirds, thriving in warm, low-oxygen conditions, which can develop when shallow wetland habitats dry out during hot weather, according to the National Nature Reserve.
Avian Botulism presents a very low risk to people and is not readily transmitted to humans.
We are monitoring the situation closely and taking appropriate measures to minimise impacts on local wildlife.
If you spot a bird carcass or wild bird that appears in distress, please do not touch it.
Instead, send us a photograph and location details so our team can respond promptly, email SouthSites@hants.gov.uk.
Traffic lights Solent Road/Hill Head Road
Work to the electrical supply to the Osborne View will start tomorrow 1 September for an estimated duration of two weeks. Temporary traffic signals at the junction of Solent Road and Hill Head Road will be in place, allowing one way passage of vehicles.
As ever, Breezes will remain open despite everything!
Ann Stratton Brown
Long standing members of HHRA will know Michael and Ann Stratton Brown. Michael was Chairman some years ago and then served on the committee. I am sorry to bring the news that Ann died last week. The funeral will be at 1415 on Tuesday 8th September at Portchester Crematorium and Hill Head friends will be very welcome.
Review of Fareham Local Plan
Fareham Borough Council is beginning a review of the Local Plan which sets the basis on which planning decisions are made. Everyone has the opportunity to comment at this early stage – and, indeed, at many future stages – via https://www.fareham.gov.uk/new_local_plan/haveyoursay.aspx Comments may be made until 2 October. The HHRA committee will spend time going through the documentation which has been circulated and will keep in touch with members in future Updates.
