HHRA Update 18 May 2024

Arthur Mandry We start this update with the sad news of the death of Arthur Mandry earlier this week.   Many of you will know Arthur from his career in Hampshire Constabulary, retiring as Detective Chief Superintendent and Head of CID; he served as councillor for Hill Head 1995 to 2018 and as mayor, deputy leader and Honorary Alderman.  He also made a major contribution to many local organisations including the Hammond Memorial Hall Trust and Crofton Youth Project. We send our sincere condolences to Kay Mandry, with our real appreciation for all that Arthur did for this community.

Fareham Borough Council  Following the recent elections and the retirement of Cllr Sean Woodward as Leader, Cllr Simon Martin has been elected as Council Leader and Cllr Louise Clubley as deputy.  For our local wards, Councillors Kay Mandry and Steve Dugan were re-elected for Hill Head and Councillors Pal Hayre and Jacquie Needham for Stubbington.  We congratulate Pal on her appointment as Town Mayor.

Hampshire County Council  You may have read that Cllr Rob Humby has resigned as Leader of HCC.  His successor will be elected by the Council on 23 May.  We do not know if that will cause changes amongst other Executive Member roles at HCC.  The trustees of Titchfield Haven Community Hub will be following up the request they made two weeks ago for an update on Haven House as soon as the outcome of 23 May appointments is known: as yet, no response has been received.

Demolition of Osborne View  We are told the demolition of the Osborne View will start on Monday 20 May.  We look forward to seeing a planning application for the new pub before long!  As you may have seen, the road closure is more limited than originally advised and is limited to Hill Head Road between Solent Road and Old Street.  The two local businesses, Breezes and Wah Ying will remain open throughout and will be glad to welcome their loyal customers.  Do spread the word that they are open.

Phaeocystis  It is the time of year when a brown discolouration and possibly a scummy deposit can be seen in the sea.  It is not what you fear it might be! It is the algal bloom phaeocystis which appears during May in coastal waters along the Channel coast and estuaries.  It is not harmful although you might understandably wish to avoid taking mouthfuls of it.

Parking behind Haven House You may know that there is a single parking bay for use by disabled people visiting the nature reserve in the ‘yard’ behind Haven House.  Please be aware that the gates to this area are locked at 4pm – one of our colleagues was, fortuitously, able to assist a disabled lady whose car was locked in last Saturday, but it was only the assistance of local residents that achieved this. We are also told that HCC intend to remove the disabled parking bay, but we have no official confirmation of that.

Fareham’s 999 day will take place on Saturday 22 June from 10am-4pm in Fareham Town Centre. There will be lots of local emergency service staff and their vehicles on display including the Police, Fire Service, South Coast Ambulance Service, RNLI, Hampshire Search and Rescue, Coastguard and much more. People will be able to chat to the emergency service personnel, find out about the work they do and even sit in some of their vehicles.  Fareham Library will also have 999 day themed crafts. For more detail see www.fareham.gov.uk/999
