HHRA Update 18 June 2024

Welcome to yet more new members – we hope you will find your membership of HHRA useful and interesting.  Do get to know the website www.hhra.org.uk which has all recent Updates under About Us Latest News and much useful information on the Local Information page.

Members’ meeting   Our next meeting is on Monday 24 June at 7.30pm at the catholic church hall on Bells Lane.  We have a change of topic as our original speaker is not allowed to speak in public during the pre-election period.  We are immensely grateful to our new speaker who has stepped in at very short notice and will, I am sure, be known to some of you.  He is Mike O’Meara, Chairman of The Historical Diving Society and trustee of the Diving Museum in Gosport.  He will tell us about the recovery in 1981 of more than 400 gold ingots from HMS Edinburgh, sunk in 1942: Mike himself was one of the divers.  He will also update us on the refurbishment of the Diving Museum.  Do arrive in good time to ensure you get a seat.

We do not usually do this, but we are so grateful to Mike for stepping into the breach at short notice and we shall invite him to bring any handy collection bucket he has for the Diving Museum, should any member wish to make a donation.  So please bring appropriate cash if you wish to donate.

Osborne View   As we are all aware, the demolition of the Osborne View is underway.  I had become aware of some speculation about whether Hall & Woodhouse were intending to stick to their stated plan of rebuilding it as a pub and all manner of gossip was circulating.  I therefore wrote to Mike James, Director at Hall & Woodhouse and spelled out what ‘the word on the promenade’ was.  He responded immediately saying I can only reiterate Matt Kearsey’s [Managing Director’s] message – we fully intend to rebuild the Osborne View as a pub. We are currently progressing the demolition, and are working up proposals for the future rebuild. Once these proposals are ready to be shared, we will be in touch with you to arrange a meeting’.

Haven House   We hear that contracts have been exchanged on the sale of Haven House and that once the purchase is completed, further information will be provided.

Bargate Homes, Old Street   There is no further news about the proposed planning application for 70 houses on the fields west of Old Street, but new members may wish to refer to the 7 June HHRA Update on the website which gives considerable details of what Bargate Homes appear to have in mind.  They are inviting initial comments via www.bargatestubbington.co.uk by 23 June, following which they will presumably put in their planning application to FBC.  Watch this space….  Your committee will be getting to work on a first draft of our objection!

Also FBC re polling stations - previously notified, extended to 26th July.
